The magistrate noted that the court showed leniency towards Garba because he promptly admitted his wrongdoing.

On Thursday, a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court ordered a 23-year-old student, Rabiu Garba, to receive 12 lashes for stealing a laptop and two mobile phones.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel imposed the sentence on Garba following his guilty plea to charges of trespass and theft.

Garba, a resident of Badiko in Kaduna who earnestly admitted his guilt, sought the court's mercy, promising to change his behavior.

The magistrate noted that the court showed leniency towards Garba because he promptly admitted his wrongdoing.

He also counseled the young man to maintain good conduct and avoid criminal activities henceforth.

Prosecutor Insp. Chidi Leo had earlier informed the court that Yusuf Usman, residing at the same address as the defendant, filed the complaint at Gabasawa Police Station on May 3.

Leo stated that Garba unlawfully entered the complainant’s room and stole a laptop worth N220,000 and two phones totaling N342,000 in value.

The stolen items were retrieved from Garba during an attempted sale, but the laptop was found to be inoperative.

The prosecutor mentioned that these acts violated the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. (NAN)
