Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, also known as Muhammadu Sanusi II, is a figure of immense importance in Nigeria, particularly in the ancient city-state of Kano. Born on July 31, 1961, into the ruling class Fulani family of the Sullubawa clan, Sanusi was destined for prominence.
A Royal Lineage and a Life of Service
Sanusi’s royal lineage traces back to his grandfather, Muhammadu Sanusi I, and he spent his formative years in the palace of his great-uncle, Ado Bayero. His father, Aminu Sanusi, served as an ambassador and a permanent secretary, instilling in Sanusi a sense of duty to his country.
Banking Reforms and Economic Insights
Before his ascension to the throne, Sanusi made his mark as an Islamic intellectual, academic, political economist, and banker. As the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2009 to 2014, he implemented significant banking reforms and exposed a $20 billion oil scandal, which led to his suspension.
Cultural Reformer and Religious Leader
As the Emir of Kano, Sanusi has been a vocal advocate for cultural reform in Northern Nigeria, using his platform to address issues ranging from education to social justice. A Throne Lost and Regained
In a dramatic turn of events, Sanusi was dethroned in 2020 by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje but was reinstated on May 23, 2024, by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. This reinstatement not only marked a significant moment in Kano’s history but also fulfilled one of Governor Yusuf’s campaign promises.
