Respect court directive, leave palace peacefully – Chiefs' Forum to Emir Sanusi |
The Chiefs' Forum in Nigeria has urged Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to heed the Federal High Court's order and promptly leave the Kano Emir's Palace.
The Forum declared that the court's verdict, issued on Tuesday, is conclusive and obligatory, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order in Kano State.
In a joint statement by its President, Chief Ameh Adaji, and Secretary-General, Chief Danladi Etsu, the Forum observed that a monarch cannot rule without the people's backing and that unlawfully occupying a palace is universally condemned.
They expressed that forcible removal by security forces would be a measure of last resort, thus they encouraged Sanusi to refrain from any conduct that might cause disgrace, conflict, or turmoil.
The chiefs also implored Sanusi to set a precedent as an ex-guardian of culture and heritage by adhering to the nation's laws and vacating the palace.
“The Chiefs' Forum in Nigeria, representing lower-tier traditional rulers, insists that Sanusi Lamido Sanusi immediately vacate the palace following the Federal High Court's mandate.
“His persistence in staying in the palace, despite the court's mandate, is a breach of national law and ridicules the esteemed historic throne of Kano.
“As an erstwhile sovereign, Sanusi ought to put the state's tranquility before personal gain. He should also avoid being a pawn for political adversaries seeking retribution.
“As a devout Muslim, Sanusi must recognize that only the divine confers and withdraws authority. His tenure as Emir has concluded, and he should not attempt an unauthorized return to the palace.
“The ex-Emir must embrace divine decree, for the populace's will reflects divine intent, and the law embodies the populace's will.
“Sanusi has turned the Kano Emirate into a subject of ridicule among emirates. Kano teeters on the brink of disorder due to his defiance of the law. The former Emir should vacate the palace amicably to safeguard his family's legacy and Kano's esteemed history.
“We trust he will follow prudent counsel and exit as the court has ordered, thereby preserving Kano from looming chaos. Kano's citizens already face severe challenges, and it would be cruel for Sanusi to also strip them of peace.
“We urge law enforcement and related agencies to enforce Sanusi's departure from the palace if he persists in ignoring the court's order. Unlawful palace occupation against the populace's will and legal principles is globally unacceptable. Immediate, decisive action is imperative to guarantee Kano's peace and stability.
“We call upon Kano's citizens to stay compliant with the law despite provocations from those intent on subverting the populace and legal system. Collective efforts are crucial to avert any disruption of order in the economic hub of the North and Nigeria's most populous state,” the Forum stated.
