PTDF Conducts Screening for International Scholarship Candidates

On Monday, the Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) conducted screenings for candidates applying to its international scholarship program for Master's and PhD levels.

During the screening at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) in Rivers State, PTDF's General Manager of Projects, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwokike, spoke to the press, emphasizing that the initiative aims to fill the skill gaps identified within the oil and gas industry.

"The PTDF's international scholarship program is designed to address the skill shortages in the oil and gas sector. We are tasked with developing capacities in the industry and are responsible for training Nigerians in various skills and vocations within the oil and gas field," Nwokike explained.

She added, "We offer these scholarships for training at leading international universities so that the beneficiaries can return and contribute to filling the skill gaps in the oil and gas industry. The scholarship program has been carefully planned, and over the years, we have successfully bridged these gaps."

Nwokike revealed that 600 candidates were screened in Port Harcourt, the center for the South-South zone. She noted that the number of scholarships granted will depend on the available funding.

"We educate Nigeria's finest, and PTDF scholars have a global reputation. The available funds will dictate how many candidates receive scholarships. The primary areas of need are engineering, geosciences, environmental studies, and renewable energy," the general manager stated.

Ere Iyalla, the Team Lead for the Overseas Scholarship Interview Program at the Port Harcourt Center, mentioned that the selection criteria include a strong WAEC result, a well-prepared research proposal, a purpose statement aligned with industry needs, and professional affiliations.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP, candidate Caleb Nwobasi praised the transparency of the screening process.

Aiming for a Master's in Civil Engineering and Management at the University of Glasgow, Nwobasi shared, "I found the process to be equitable and transparent, with no hint of any underhanded dealings. This is my second application; my first attempt two years ago was unsuccessful. This time, I've made extra efforts to ensure all necessary documents are in order, eliminating any chance of errors."
