SP Kiyawa clarified that the purpose of the operation was to eliminate illegal operators to stabilize the nation's foreign exchange market.

The Kano State Police have detained seventeen individuals suspected of illegally operating a Bureau de Change.

The command's spokesperson, SP. Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, verified the detentions in a press release to journalists.

He reported that the detentions were the result of a crackdown by the Kano Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS) personnel at venues where FOREX dealings were taking place in Wappa Bureau De Change, Fagge LGA, Kano.

He stated, "Following the operation, twenty-nine (29) individuals were initially detained, but twelve (12) were later released due to insufficient evidence, leaving seventeen (17) in custody with seized items including Sixty-eight Thousand (68,000) CFA and Thirty (30) Rupees (Indian Currency)."

Further inquiries indicated that the seventeen detainees were part of an Association of unlicensed Bureau De Change operators, and they are set to be prosecuted.

SP Kiyawa clarified that the purpose of the operation was to eliminate illegal operators to stabilize the nation's foreign exchange market.

The operation did not affect legitimate Bureau de Change operators conducting their business lawfully.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, emphasized that the state will not condone illegal financial dealings and those found guilty will be subjected to legal consequences.

He urged everyone in the financial sector to adhere to legal guidelines, secure the appropriate permits, and refrain from engaging in illicit activities.
