Northern Youths Firmly Reject Foreign Military Bases |
Recent reports suggest that the Federal Government was contemplating approving military bases for the US and France after their expulsion from neighboring Niger. However, prominent Northerners have cautioned President Bola Tinubu against granting such approval.
The Northern Youth Leader’s Forum (NYLF) has issued a stern warning: the North will never permit "a square meter of its land to be ceded to French or American governments for hosting military bases, regardless of any pretext or justification."
Recent reports suggest that the Federal Government was contemplating approving military bases for the US and France after their expulsion from neighboring Niger. However, prominent Northerners have cautioned President Bola Tinubu against granting such approval.
In response, Information Minister Mohammed Idris clarified that the government had no intention of accommodating foreign military bases within Nigeria's borders, dismissing the notion as "false alarms."
Speaking to journalists in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Wednesday, the National President of NYLF, Comrade Afiyo Elliot, expressed the unwavering stance of Northern youths against this proposal.
"We want to make it unequivocally clear that we have closely observed the French Government's actions, which have often run counter to Nigeria's interests, particularly in the North East and North West geopolitical zones," Afiyo asserted.
He continued, "The Northern youth will never allow even a single square meter of land in the entire North to be surrendered to French or American governments, no matter the pretext. If the Federal Government persists with this plan, then they should be prepared to face our collective resistance."
