Leaders from the North West states have sought the United Nations' aid for the humanitarian and restoration efforts in their geopolitical zone.

According to a Friday announcement by Oluseyi Soremekun, the national information officer of the UN Information Centre (UNIC), North West governors met with the UN Country Team, headed by resident and humanitarian coordinator Mohamed Malick Fall. They requested UN assistance to tackle the various developmental hurdles their states encounter.
The announcement states: "Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, the North West Governors Forum chair and Katsina State governor, led his counterparts, including Kaduna State's Senator Uba Sani; Kano's Abba Kabir Yusuf; Jigawa State's Mallam Umar Namadi; Sokoto State's deputy governor, Alhaji Idris Muhammad Gobir; and Zamfara State's governor, Dauda Lawal, to the UN House in Abuja.
The leaders outlined significant issues plaguing the area, such as insecurity, pervasive poverty, numerous out-of-school children, rising illicit drug use, elevated child and maternal death rates, and widespread youth unemployment.
They noted that about 80% of the populace relies on agriculture for their livelihoods, yet they confront land degradation and climate change challenges, diminishing their agricultural output. The governors also pointed out the critical levels of child undernutrition.
They pledged robust political backing to guarantee the swift and extensive implementation of UN measures in the North West."
The forum's chairman remarked: "Overcoming the North West's obstacles requires a collective regional strategy, necessitating our collaboration. We must jointly address poverty and joblessness, the primary causes of the region's instability."
The UN resident coordinator expressed pleasure in welcoming six of the seven zone governors. He confirmed the UN's commitment to aiding the North West in overcoming these developmental issues.
He emphasized that achieving the sustainable development goals in Nigeria hinges on the North West's success, which would, in turn, positively influence the entire African continent.
