NiMet Forecasts 143 Rainy Days for Gombe State

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts that Gombe State is set to experience 143 days of rainfall in the current season.

Lydia Simon-Bawa, the Climate Change Desk Officer at the Gombe State Ministry of Water, Environment and Forest Resources, released a statement on Monday in Gombe detailing the forecast.

According to her, the rainy season in the state is expected to commence on May 25 in the Shongom Local Government Area, and on June 12 in Nafada.

She noted that the duration of rainfall would be relatively short in Nafada, lasting about 112 days, while in the Yamaltu/Deba LGA, it would extend to 143 days.

The end of the rainy season is anticipated to be on October 14 in Nafada and on November 4 in Yamaltu/Deba LGA.

The predicted annual rainfall is expected to be lower than usual, ranging from 606mm to 789mm.

Nafada is projected to receive the least amount of rainfall at 606mm, whereas Shongom could see up to 789mm.

Simon-Bawa also mentioned the likelihood of a severe dry spell in July, lasting over 15 days, affecting areas such as Nafada, Yamaltu/Deba, Dukku, and Funakaye LGAs.

She added that the forecast for May suggests higher than normal day and night temperatures, with potential strong windstorms nationwide and sandstorms in the northernmost states, including Gombe.

Simon-Bawa advised state agencies and residents to clear drains to prevent mosquito breeding and flooding, which could lead to loss of life and property.

She also cautioned against littering waterways and encouraged farmers to use the climate predictions to plan their activities to minimize adverse impacts.
