Several Nigerian students studying at Teesside University in the United Kingdom have encountered difficulties due to a currency crisis that left them struggling to pay tuition fees on time. As a result, the university has taken action, blocking these students from their studies and reporting them to the Home Office.
The economic situation in Nigeria has significantly impacted these students. Before starting their studies at Teesside, they were required to demonstrate proof of sufficient funds for tuition fees and living expenses. However, the crisis in their home country severely depleted those funds.
Moreover, the university's decision to change tuition fee payment plans from seven installments to three further exacerbated financial challenges for these students. As a consequence, some individuals defaulted on payments, leading to freezing of university accounts and involuntary withdrawal from courses.
Adenike Ibrahim, who was close to completing her dissertation after two years of study, missed one payment and was subsequently removed from her course and reported to the Home Office. Despite having paid 90% of her tuition fees and attending all classes, she faced distressing consequences.
The Home Office informed affected students that their permission to stay in the UK had been canceled due to their discontinued studies. The letters issued by the Home Office set a departure date and state that students have no right of appeal or administrative review against the decision.
The situation has taken a toll on students' mental health. Some have contemplated suicide, while others struggle with depression and isolation. The lack of communication from the university has added to their distress.
These students, who have invested significant resources to pursue their education in the UK, find themselves caught in a challenging and heart-wrenching situation.
