The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has failed to appear before a Coroner's inquest into the deaths of seven people who lost their lives in a stampede during a rice distribution exercise in Lagos. The incident occurred on February 23 at the NCS zonal headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, and was widely condemned.
The Alliance on Surviving Covid-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), a human rights group, had called on the Nigerian Customs Service NCS to compensate the victims' families and warned of legal action if ignored. Despite this, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) rejected a letter summoning them to appear before the Coroner, stalling the inquest proceedings.
Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, who is representing the victims' families, expressed disappointment at the NCS's refusal to cooperate with the inquest. "The NCS's failure to appear before the Coroner is unacceptable and only serves to further injustice for the victims' families," Falana said.
The matter has been adjourned to May 31, 2024, for mention. The NCS's actions have sparked outrage and raised questions about their commitment to accountability and justice for the victims of their actions.
