The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has announced its intention to start manufacturing laptops, android smartphones, lithium batteries, and solar street lights.
Khalil Halilu, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NASENI, revealed these plans during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday.
The initiative is aimed at establishing national brands that can compete in the global market.
The production line will enhance the existing array of products, which includes a solar irrigation system, electric tricycles, electric motorcycles, and solar-powered cargo tricycles.
The agency's mandate includes the localization of technology, encompassing both capital and consumer goods.
NASENI is adopting a rapid approach to the Technology Transfer and Commercialization of its research and development (R&D) outcomes, with the goal of generating employment, creating wealth, and reducing the nation's import bills.
Halilu explained that NASENI is following its 3C principles of creation, collaboration, and commercialization, working with strategic partners from both the public and private sectors to ensure that research translates into tangible products for consumers.
Addressing concerns about market competitiveness, he stated, "Nigeria's market is highly competitive, but we are energizing our business development unit to offer better value at more affordable prices."
He assured that the products would be distributed widely, with NASENI exploring partnerships with other government agencies to ensure availability across all local governments, as well as the potential use of agents.
The collaboration extends to the private sector, with NASENI venturing into the production of West Africa's first solar mounting ramp.
Halilu also highlighted several of NASENI's achievements and ongoing projects, including the NASENI Proposal Evaluation Portal, NASENI Growth Hacker, NASENI ERP, NASENI eProcurement, NASENI StemBox, NASENI Innovation Hub, PICTT, and more.
