World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has advocated for increased inclusion and participation of women in leadership roles.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Duchess of Sussex Meghan and other female leaders at the Nigerian Women in Leadership event in Abuja on Saturday, Okonjo-Iweala highlighted the persistent challenges women face in leadership.
During the discussions, the WTO chief noted that the group, including the Duchess, shared perspectives on various topics and deliberated on strategies to promote more women in leadership roles.
Okonjo-Iweala emphasized the critical need to boost the representation of women in leadership at both state and federal levels.
In her conversation with the Duchess, she addressed issues such as the obstacles women encounter in leadership and strategies for overcoming them.
The Director-General also touched on the importance of women supporting each other to enhance their status within the country.
"We need to bolster the role of women nationally. The representation of women in the National Assembly is exceedingly low. We've yet to see a female governor or higher officeholder.
"Change is necessary, and it won't be handed to women; they must actively pursue it. However, male support is essential since sidelining half the population is not an option.
"Today's discussion revolved around these topics, and we explored solutions to the leadership challenges women face.
"The majority of women present are already established leaders, not aspiring to reach the top, as they've already attained it," she concluded.
