NAPTIP rescues three individuals trafficked to Ivory Coast

The Benin Zonal Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has announced the rescue of three individuals trafficked to Ivory Coast.

According to DAILY POST, the NAPTIP Zonal Commander, Barrister Nduka Nwanwenene, revealed this information during a baseline revalidation workshop for STEAP implementation in Edo schools on human trafficking, held in Benin.

Nwanwenene stated that the three individuals are now being cared for at the agency’s shelter in Benin City.

He mentioned that the trio, rescued from Ivory Coast, arrived at the shelter three days prior. The duration of stay for many survivors at the shelter is approximately six weeks, varying with each case.

He recounted the case of a woman rescued from Mali after a decade, who has since been reunited with her family and started a business with support from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Furthermore, Nwanwenene highlighted the agency's collaboration with various stakeholders, especially the Nigeria Immigration Services (NIS), who alert NAPTIP when they intercept potential trafficking victims at the Nigerian border.

The Zonal Commander emphasized the agency's efforts to involve survivors in productive activities to reduce the likelihood of them being trafficked again.

He added that in the previous month, the agency had empowered three survivors, and another 15, currently in training at the shelter, are set to be similarly supported upon completing their program in six months.
