| NAFDAC detains five for alleged sale of counterfeit cosmetics in Abuja |

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) apprehended five individuals on Wednesday in Abuja for peddling fake cosmetics.
According to NAN, the apprehensions occurred in the Garki and Wuse areas during a crackdown on substandard products.
Mr. Embugushiki-Musa Godiya, NAFDAC's Head of Investigation and Enforcement, Federal Taskforce, spoke to the press post-enforcement, stating that the detainees would undergo investigation.
Godiya affirmed NAFDAC's commitment to eradicating counterfeit cosmetics and other fraudulent products from the nation.
He mentioned that the agency had been probing certain counterfeit cosmetics based on intelligence reports, noting that some products had been smuggled into the country despite stringent border security.
“NAFDAC maintains a presence at all national entry points. However, given the porous nature of our borders, smugglers often circumvent the government's safeguards.
Therefore, when they bypass the ports or borders, we target the markets and all relevant locations, compile intelligence, pursue these individuals, and seize their products for potential legal action,” explained Godiya.
He disclosed that the confiscated cosmetics are valued at N35 million in the market, and NAFDAC will persist in its investigation to determine the suspects' complicity.
Godiya indicated that following the investigation, the agency's management would decide on regulatory measures, which might include prosecuting the apprehended individuals for their offenses.
