Organized Labour countered with a proposal of N494,000 as the new national minimum wage for the country's workforce.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has called on organized labour to show consideration and national spirit in their current demands during the ongoing discussions for a new national minimum wage.

Onyejeocha issued this plea in a statement signed by Mr. Olajide Oshundun, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to NAN, at the Tripartite Committee meeting on Minimum Wage negotiations held on Tuesday, the Federal Government proposed N60,000 as the new minimum wage to Labour representatives.

Organized Labour countered with a proposal of N494,000 as the new national minimum wage for the country's workforce.

The minister emphasized that the federal government has consistently endeavored to establish a just and feasible wage for workers in Nigeria.

She, therefore, called on labour to acknowledge that the country's economy is in the process of recuperating from the pandemic's impact and other economic challenges.

"We request organized labour and other key stakeholders to show consideration and national spirit in their demands, mindful that our economy is on the mend from the severe impacts of the pandemic and various international economic difficulties.

"We are devoted to prioritizing our people and ensuring that our economic strategies are advantageous to all Nigerians, not merely a privileged minority.

"The government is committed to the welfare of our citizens and encourages all involved parties to show national spirit and comprehension.

This is especially pertinent at this crucial time when President Bola Tinubu is earnestly striving to rejuvenate the economy," she stated.

Consequently, the minister acknowledged the intricate and diverse economic difficulties faced by Nigerians and called for a united effort from all parties involved to surmount these challenges.
