| Lawmaker Reveals Intentions Regarding Kano Emirates After Gov Abba's Inauguration |
The proposed amendment, known as the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law 2024 (1445AH), was introduced by the majority leader and representative of Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, and successfully passed its first reading on Wednesday.
A prominent member of the Kano State House of Assembly has disclosed that some legislators initially aimed to dissolve the Kano emirates shortly after the inauguration of the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration.
Speaking confidentially to our correspondent, the officer emphasized that nothing can hinder the Assembly from amending the Kano emirate law.
The proposed amendment, known as the Kano State Emirates Council (Amendment number 2) Law 2024 (1445AH), was introduced by the majority leader and representative of Dala Constituency, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, and successfully passed its first reading on Wednesday.
The Kano State Emirates Council Law 2019, which initially established five new Emirates, received the assent of the immediate past governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on December 5, 2019.
Subsequently, Ganduje approved an amended version of the law on October 14, 2020, and signed another amendment on April 11, 2023.
Regarding the recent developments, the lawmaker asserted, "We have been prepared for this for quite some time, and only divine intervention can halt this amendment. Our original intention was for all these emirs to step down within 20 days of this administration's inauguration, but circumstances have led us here. Therefore, a special session of the Assembly is scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) to deliberate and pass the amendment."
However, the minority leader of the Assembly, Abdul Labaran Madari, informed BBC Hausa that 12 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House do not oppose the amendment, provided that none of the five Emirates is dissolved and that the current Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, remains in place without being deposed or replaced by Muhammad Sanusi.
While the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) lawmakers in the Assembly hold the numerical advantage to effect the amendment, opposition members are expected to express their dissent.
Madari also alleged that the ruling party has devised a plan to dissolve the Bichi emirate and reinstate the deposed Emir Sanusi.
