Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 General Elections Presidential Candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, has stated that he played no role in the reinstatement of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano.
Kwankwaso, who initially installed Sanusi as Emir in 2014, noted that his successor, Abdullahi Ganduje, removed the monarch in 2020.
Following the NNPP's victory in the 2023 governorship election, Kwankwaso had indicated that Sanusi's removal would be reconsidered.
The Kano House of Assembly, on Thursday, annulled the Emirate Council Law, facilitating Sanusi's return to the throne.
In a BBC interview, Kwankwaso remarked, "I will soon visit Kano to discuss the current developments with some assembly members, particularly the speaker, and the Governor.
"Rabiu Kwankwaso is no longer in a position to dictate actions. We are collaborating with the Governor. Our role is to advise, and if not solicited, we remain silent. As long as things are progressing well, we simply pray and hope for their success."
When asked about his previous statement on reviewing the dethronement, he clarified, "My comment about revisiting the case did not specify which direction it would take. I merely stated it would be reviewed... Upon my visit, I will learn of the events, and I trust they will inform me of the details. We will continue to pray for them. I understand the Assembly has rescinded the law.
"We advised them to investigate whether the actions taken were in good faith or not. It seems to be motivated by revenge or unfairness. The question is whether Ganduje's actions were justified, not about opposing him."
Addressing the emirate's future and political influences, he added, "Those considering whether it will be tenure-based have a point. But who initiated it? When I resumed as Governor in 2011, it was known that the late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, didn't support us; he backed Shekarau. Despite gaining power, we never contemplated his removal. That's why we advocate for everyone to remain in their rightful place."
