| Kano University ASUU Cites Government Neglect, Warns of Potential Strike |
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yusuf Maitama University, Kano, has sounded the alarm about an impending crisis with the Kano State Government.
The Union has charged the government with ignoring its requests.
A statement co-signed by the Branch Chairman and the Secretary, Comrades Mansur Said and Yusuf Ahmed Gwarzo, on Wednesday, highlighted three critical concerns troubling its members: improving service conditions, accelerating the University's development through consistent funding, and upholding University Autonomy and Academic Freedom.
The union expressed that it felt compelled to publicize these issues after multiple attempts to have the state government address their demands were unsuccessful.
Per the ASUU, "Condition of Service: The branch insists on the immediate disbursement of the overdue Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), amounting to one hundred and seventy-eight million, seven hundred and five thousand, seven hundred and thirty-five naira and ninety-one kobo (N178,705,735.91).
"The public should be aware that the Union had recently forged an agreement with the KNSG, which vowed to settle this amount in four payments starting from April 2024. Yet, disappointingly, the first payment has not been made thus far.
"The Union also calls for the settlement of the pending Consequential Adjustment Arrears, totaling one hundred and eleven million, three hundred and twenty-one thousand, seven hundred and ninety-two naira; eighteen kobo (N111,321,792.18).
"Additionally, the Union seeks the enactment of the newly-sanctioned Consolidated Universities Academic Salary Structure II (CONUASS II), retroactive to January 1, 2023. It's noteworthy that this pay rise has been enacted in ALL Federal Universities. Despite communicating this to the KNSG, there has been no affirmative action on implementation.
In terms of service conditions, the Union also demands the payment of a provisional Wage Award of N35,000 for six months, sanctioned by the Federal Government.
“The Union urgently calls for the reconstitution of the University Governing Council. We stress the critical importance, as mandated by law, of the University Governing Council and how its absence hampers the University’s administration.”
ASUU is appealing to the University’s Visitor to step up efforts to resolve these pressing issues to maintain industrial harmony.
