| Kano Religious Leaders Caution Against Intensifying Emirate Dispute |
The Council of Ulamas in Kano State, comprising Islamic scholars, has issued a warning that the ongoing dispute within the Kano emirate could potentially lead to a disruption of peace and order.
In a document endorsed by the council's leader, Ibrahim Khalil, the group called upon President Bola Tinubu to adopt impartial strategies to mitigate the crisis.
"It is crucial for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to undertake all essential actions to preserve tranquility in the state," the council emphasized.
"The responsibility of the State House of Assembly is to legislate for effective governance, and such efforts necessitate the backing and collaboration of the Federal Government.
"After the State Assembly revised the Kano State Emirates Law and received the Governor's approval, an individual challenged the law in court, asserting it infringed upon his basic human rights, to which he is lawfully entitled.
The Governor, as the state's Chief Executive, bears the duty to ensure the law's enactment. Given that the legislative act has been finalized, there is no justification for any violent execution of the order or resistance against it. We strongly disapprove of any actions that might heighten the conflict within the state.
"Mr. President, as the head of the country, must prevent the royal succession dispute from escalating into conflict. We urge Mr. President to facilitate a peaceful resolution among the people of Kano State, devoid of coercion and casualties.
Kano State is renowned for its tranquility; hence, we implore the disputing factions to engage in peaceful dialogue to maintain harmony within the state.
"As principal participants in the state's affairs, we assure Mr. President of our commitment to mediate with the contenders to amicably settle the dispute," the council conveyed in their announcement to the press.
