Kano Emirate Dispute: Northern Monarchs Urge Calm |
The Council of Northern Traditional Rulers, presided over by the Sultan of Sokoto, has urged calm and peace in Kano amid the state's rising tensions.
The unrest follows the annulment of five Emirates and the restoration of Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.
Upon enacting the new law dissolving the five emirates, Governor Abba Yusuf instructed the ousted emirs to vacate their official dwellings and relinquish properties to the local government and chieftaincy affairs commissioner, who also serves as the Deputy Governor.
In an unexpected turn, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, a dethroned emir who was not in the state when the directive was issued, returned to Kano and proceeded to a secondary palace in Nassarawa.
Governor Yusuf ordered the emir's detention in response to this event, but the police pledged to honor the judicial order that halted Sanusi's reinstatement.
With Sanusi in the primary palace and Aminu Ado Bayero in the Nassarawa palace, concerns have emerged. Stakeholders from Kano and beyond are urging officials to address the issue to preserve state harmony.
Ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, religious leaders, NGOs, and others have requested President Bola Tinubu's intervention to prevent further escalation.
The Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council called for moderation in a Sunday statement.
The Northern Traditional Ruling Council, led by His Eminence the Sultan of Sokoto, expresses concern over Kano's current state and its impact on our esteemed institution.
"The Council responsibly requests all parties to exercise restraint for the sake of peace and stability, especially since the matter has been brought to court, making it sub-judice.
"The Council prays for Almighty Allah to ensure peace in Kano and across Nigeria."
