At the inauguration of the Trans-Kalabari Road project at Nkpor-Aker Road Roundabout in Rumuolumeni community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Jonathan addressed the challenges typically linked with governmental transitions in Nigeria.
Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan has urged the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to reconcile their differences to avert the state's political crisis from intensifying into a broader regional and national concern.
At the inauguration of the Trans-Kalabari Road project at Nkpor-Aker Road Roundabout in Rumuolumeni community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Jonathan addressed the challenges typically linked with governmental transitions in Nigeria.
He observed that state-level transitions tend to be more contentious, despite federal transitions being relatively smoother.
Jonathan stressed the necessity of collaboration between outgoing and incoming governors for the welfare of their states' residents.
He called on Wike and Fubara to unite for Rivers State's advancement, remarking, "The tension is counterproductive. Rivers State's stability is pivotal for this nation. Should Rivers State become unstable, it would affect the entire Niger Delta."
He added, "Leaders must acknowledge that compromise is essential. Our political figures must unite out of love for the Rivers people. I echo the calls of Rivers State's leaders and other Nigerians for reconciliation and peace."
Jonathan also pointed out, "Conflict between leaders harms the community. Both the governor and the minister are influential figures. Their ongoing conflict will only harm Rivers State's citizens. We urge them to come together. Unity is needed for effective action. We encourage them to collaborate for the Rivers people's shared benefit."
"Let's progress beyond past events for the state's benefit, the Niger Delta's, and indeed, the nation's," he concluded.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in his address, pledged his administration's dedication to finishing the Trans-Kalabari Road project to boost socio-economic growth in the affected rural areas. He called for community support for the project and vigilance against any acts of sabotage.
According to Daily Trust, the discord between Wike and Fubara, which escalated last October, has undergone multiple mediations, including efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Nonetheless, recent events suggest the collapse of the peace facilitated by the president.
Analysts have remarked that the project's commencement is a significant political move by Fubara, especially since Wike hails from Obio/Akpor LGA, where the event took place, and began his political career as the LGA's chairman.
