| Insecurity: NSCDC Commander Slain by Bandits in Benue |
A family member of the late Mike Ode, Nicholas Ode, revealed that his brother was viciously slain in the village of Shaapera in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue state on Monday.
Armed individuals believed to be bandits have allegedly slain a commander of the agro ranger unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Benue State.
The fallen officer was named as Mike Ode.
This event occurred within the Shaapera community in the Gwer West Local Government Area of the state.
A family member of the late Mike Ode, Nicholas Ode, revealed that his brother was viciously slain in the village of Shaapera in the Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue state on Monday.
He mentioned that the body had been placed in the mortuary of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi.
"We received information that he was on a special mission in Shaapera village.
"During this mission, they engaged with herdsmen, and in the ensuing firefight, it was confirmed that the NSCDC officers managed to eliminate as many as 10 of the assailants.
"Regrettably, we learned that one of the four civil defence members, my brother, was fatally shot, while the rest managed to flee," he stated.
The NSCDC Command's Spokesperson, Mike Ejelikwu, verified the occurrence.
He declared that the loss of the officer would not impede the command's duty to fulfill its constitutional role of safeguarding all law-abiding citizens within the state.
"The NSCDC operates a specialized unit known as the Agro Rangers, which is deployed across various areas including Gwer West, Logo, Apa, Kwande, Guma, and others, to secure Agro-allied ventures, whether in livestock or crop cultivation," he explained.
He further noted that the officer was killed in a shootout with the bandits, and emphasized that the bandits suffered significant losses.
"We mourn the loss of an agro ranger who was also the leader of the operation," he added, noting that the command was maintaining communication with his kin.
