The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), under the leadership of Managing Director Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, has seen an influx of over 60,000 student loan applications since the NELFUND portal opened last Friday for students at federal institutions.

On Thursday, while addressing journalists in Abuja, Sawyerr revealed that half of the applications, amounting to 30,000, have been successfully processed for loan access.

The Fund's website has also registered over 9.5 million visits to date.

Describing the remarkable increase in applications as evidence of the essential need for financial support among students, he expressed satisfaction with the response.

Sawyerr reported, "It's encouraging to see that over 90 percent of Federal higher education institutions have submitted their student data to NELFUND. We now call on the remaining two federal universities and five federal polytechnics to hasten their submissions, ensuring all qualified students have the opportunity to benefit from the financial aid."

He further announced that starting June 25, 2024, NELFUND will begin accepting loan applications from students at state-run tertiary institutions.

He urged these institutions to promptly provide their student data as required to ensure a streamlined application process.

Additionally, Sawyerr highlighted NELFUND's commitment to not just financial aid but also to the vital task of equipping young people with practical skills that are relevant in today's market.

"We are six months away from launching an extensive skill acquisition initiative, which will offer training in a variety of vocational and technical disciplines," he stated.

The aim of the program is to ready students for the contemporary job market, promoting entrepreneurship and innovation among the youth.

Sawyerr took the opportunity to praise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support and vision and acknowledged the hard work of all parties involved, including the media and the NELFUND team, for their relentless efforts to positively impact the lives of Nigerian students.
