Tragedy struck on Saturday night near the Imo State University (IMSU) junction in Owerri when an articulated truck lost control and collided with vehicles and pedestrians.
The incident resulted in the deaths of six people, including a lecturer from the university. Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred around 7 p.m. as the heavy-duty vehicle drove against traffic, ramming into commuter buses traveling from Owerri to the Owerri-Okigwe lane.
Chidiebube Okeoma, a journalist who witnessed the incident, played a crucial role in transporting the injured victims to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri. Initial attempts to seek help at nearby hospitals were unsuccessful due to the absence of medical personnel, necessitating the transfer to FMC. Dr. Nicholas Isinwa, a lecturer from IMSU’s Department of Marketing, was among the deceased.
His brother, Okpor Dominic, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss. The incident highlights the need for the state government to address the recurring issue of auto crashes at the IMSU junction. Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the fatalities, and the injured victims are receiving treatment at FMC Owerri. My condolences to the families affected by this devastating event.
