The esteemed British actor, Ian Gelder, who brought to life the character of Kevan Lannister in the acclaimed fantasy series Game of Thrones, has died aged 74.

With a career that spanned several decades, he was a recognized figure on television, with notable roles in Torchwood, His Dark Materials, Doctor Who, Snatch, and The Bill.

His death came five months after a diagnosis of bile duct cancer, as shared by his spouse and fellow actor, Ben Daniels, on Instagram.

"With profound sadness and a heart shattered into countless pieces, I must share the news of my beloved husband and lifelong companion Ian Gelder's departure.

"Ian received a bile duct cancer diagnosis in December, and he departed yesterday at 13.07. Since his diagnosis, I ceased all work to care for him, but the rapid progression took us both by surprise," Daniels revealed on Tuesday.

"Ian was my rock, and for over 30 years, we were partners. We communicated daily when not together.

"Ian's kindness, generosity, and love knew no bounds. He was an extraordinary actor whose warmth and light affected all who collaborated with him.

"Life without him at my side is unimaginable. He faced his terrible illness with immense courage and never once self-pity. His remarkable spirit will be deeply missed."

Daniels, posting a photo with Gelder, remarked: "This image was captured during Christmas after his hospital discharge, and despite enduring the toughest three weeks, his vibrancy and affection remain evident.

"Sleep peacefully, my dear Chianni Xxxx."

Gelder was a veteran of both screen and stage, known for his portrayal of Kevan Lannister, Tywin's younger brother (played by Charles Dance), in Game of Thrones' first season and subsequent seasons, culminating in his character's end in the series finale.

His most recent appearance was earlier this year in an episode of the BBC One series Father Brown.

Gelder's other memorable role was Mr Dekker in Torchwood: Children of Earth. In 2019, he appeared as Charles, a Librarian scholar at Jordan College, in the BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials, and in 2020, he featured as Zellin in Doctor Who.

Additionally, his career included performances in TV series such as London’s Burning and Agatha Christie’s Poirot, and he graced the stages of London’s West End and the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
