The Federal Government has announced the official opening of the student loan application portal for today, Friday, May 24, 2024.


Nasir Ayitogo, the Media and Public Relations Lead at the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), revealed this in a statement last Thursday in Abuja.


In light of this announcement, NELFUND has provided clear instructions on how students can apply for the loan, coinciding with the opening of the application portal today.


The student loan offers financial support for tuition and living expenses at accredited higher education and vocational training institutions across Nigeria.


Here are the step-by-step instructions to apply for a student loan as per NELFUND:


Step 1: Go to nelf.gov.ng


Step 2: Select “Apply Now”


Step 3: Choose “Get Started”


Step 4: Continue by answering the questions on this page, starting with “Yes, I am a Nigerian”


Step 5: Confirm your educational details. Select your institution from a list and enter your matric number to verify if your school has uploaded your information.


Step 6: Use the “Verify with JAMB” option and input your JAMB details on the screen.


(For students whose NIN is not registered with JAMB, there will be a field to enter their NIN for validation.)


Step 7: Register by providing your email and creating a password. Confirm the password and select “Create Account.”


Step 8: Finalize account creation by clicking the verification link sent to your email.


Completing Your Profile


Post-registration, sign in by hitting the “LOGIN” button.


Step 1: Log in with your email and password.


Step 2: Move to “Proceed to Contact Details.”


Step 3: Fill in your current contact information, including phone number, address, state, and local government area, then proceed to “Educational Details.”


Step 4: Update your educational information with your institution and matric number, then go to “Account Details.”


Step 5: Confirm your BVN, choose your bank, and enter your account number. Save the changes to finalize your profile.


Applying for the Loan


Step 1: After logging in, click “Request for student loan” on the home or loans page.


Step 2: For an upkeep loan, tick the box and click “continue,” or just click “Continue” for tuition fees alone.


Step 3: Upload necessary documents. An admission letter is mandatory, while student ID and institution invoice are optional.


Tick the policy and declaration box and proceed.


Step 4: Review the loan details, agree to the terms & conditions and GSI Mandate, then submit your application.


Step 5: Check your application status by selecting the “loans” option.
