| Hajj: Preserve our reputation – Makinde advises Oyo pilgrims |
The governor emphasized the importance of concentrating on the spiritual purpose of their journey to the sacred land.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged the pilgrims preparing for the 2024 Hajj in Saudi Arabia to refrain from any behavior that could damage the reputation of the state and the nation.
Speaking on Wednesday, Makinde instructed the 1,007 pilgrims to demonstrate exemplary conduct, adhere to established regulations, and avoid actions that could harm the state's and nation's image.
The governor emphasized the importance of concentrating on the spiritual purpose of their journey to the sacred land.
These statements were made by Makinde at the send-off event for the state's pilgrims.
The ceremony, conducted in Ibadan, the state's capital, saw the presence of the Chief Imam of Ogbomosoland, Sheikh Teilat Ayilara, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, and other dignitaries.
Makinde also reminded the state’s Hajj officials of their duty to not neglect the pilgrims' welfare.
He urged them to prioritize the safety of all pilgrims while in Saudi Arabia.
He expressed: “It's a pleasure to join you this afternoon. Originally, we were to gather at the Hajj Camp in Olodo. The reason for today's location change is the demolition of the bridge connecting Olodo, but traffic will resume on one side by the end of this week. By the 2025 Hajj, both sides will be accessible, and the road from Iwo Road to Olodo will be complete. This year is a temporary setup; next year's will be improved.
On my initial visit to Olodo, I promised that our pilgrims would fly from Ibadan Airport before my term ends. It's been five years, and while they've agreed to depart from Ibadan, they require a stopover in Lagos for document processing, which contradicts my goal.
My aim is for all processing to occur here, with direct flights from Ibadan to Saudi Arabia. We've met most airport requirements, except extending the runway by 600 meters, installing an Instrument Landing System (ILS), and constructing an additional terminal. Our goal is to complete these within the next 18 months.
“I seize this moment to remind the officials overseeing this Hajj operation that our people's welfare is paramount. You are entrusted with the care of every Oyo State pilgrim.”
