Hajj: NAHCON Cautions Pilgrims on Smuggling Cigarettes, Kolanuts

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has issued a warning to Nigerian pilgrims against smuggling cigarettes and kola nuts into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In a statement released on Thursday, NAHCON’s Assistant Director of Public Affairs, Fatima Sanda Usara, highlighted that carrying illicit drugs, kola nuts, or cigarettes into the Kingdom could result in a death sentence.

"Pilgrims are reminded that Saudi Arabia, a nation with deep religious and cultural roots, enforces stringent anti-drug trafficking laws, with the death penalty as a possible consequence. NAHCON advises pilgrims to focus on their worship during their stay in Saudi Arabia and avoid actions that could desecrate the sanctity of their Hajj," stated Fatima.

She further cautioned prospective pilgrims about the risk of inadvertently becoming carriers in illicit trading activities.

Additionally, Fatima mentioned that the economic downturn affecting various aspects of the 2024 Hajj operations would also impact the payment of NAHCON staff stipends for the Hajj period.

Expressing regret over these circumstances, she noted that financial limitations will necessitate the suspension of certain NAHCON-specific allowances for now.

"Despite these difficulties, the commission is optimistic that conditions will improve, allowing for a reassessment and potential modest increase of staff allowances," she added.

This year, staff members will have the choice to return to Nigeria after completing 21 days of service, should they decide to do so.

NAHCON's chairman, Malam Jalal Arabi, discussed the commission's financial challenges with staff on overseas assignments during a zoom meeting, seeking their understanding. This financial strain also prompted NAHCON's call for voluntary medical services from the National Medical Team. Likewise, the allowances for all operational committee members, including the Media Team, Ulama, Security, and other key groups, are constrained by the budget.
