Gombe State Governor Takes Proactive Steps to Address Water Crisis

The governor emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "You must fix this problem with immediate effect, I don't want any delay. We are not ready to take any excuse. You must ensure production and pumping of water to the people latest by Wednesday."

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has issued a directive to the Ministry of Water, Environment, and Forest Resources and other relevant agencies to expedite action and restore normal water production and distribution to Gombe Metropolis and surrounding areas. This swift action is a result of the governor's deep concern for the basic needs of his people and his commitment to ensuring uninterrupted water supply.

The governor emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "You must fix this problem with immediate effect, I don't want any delay. We are not ready to take any excuse. You must ensure production and pumping of water to the people latest by Wednesday."

The water crisis was caused by a power supply interruption resulting from vandalism of some poles on the 330KV Jos-Gombe transmission line. The Dadinkowa Water Supply Scheme, which produces approximately 35 million liters of water per day, was affected, leaving residents without access to clean water.

Acting on the governor's directive, the ministry mobilized its technical teams to replace the broken-down electric poles and repair power cables to ensure power supply to the water treatment plant at Dadinkowa. Despite partial restoration of the power line, the treatment plant requires a dedicated power supply to operate optimally.

Following a damaging windstorm on April 25, 2024, up to 31 electric poles along the dedicated power line were damaged, halting water production, pumping, and distribution. The technical teams are working tirelessly to complete the restoration work by Tuesday, April 30, 2024, with production, pumping, and distribution expected to resume immediately by Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

The governor's swift action demonstrates his commitment to addressing the basic needs of his people and ensuring their well-being. The prompt restoration of water supply will bring relief to the residents of Gombe Metropolis and surrounding areas.
