Following ASUU's Warning, FG Names Governing Councils for 111 Higher Education Institutions

The announcement, authorized by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, revealed the selection of a chairperson and four members for each educational institution.

President Bola Tinubu has sanctioned the appointment of 555 individuals to serve as Pro-chancellors/Chairmen and members of the Governing Boards for 111 Federal Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.

The formation of the governing councils came after President Tinubu endorsed a roster of candidates proposed by the Ministry of Education.

The announcement, authorized by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, revealed the selection of a chairperson and four members for each educational institution.

The notice declared that the Inaugural/Retreat for the Chairmen and Members of the Governing Councils of Higher Education Institutions is scheduled for Thursday, May 30th, and Friday, May 31st, 2024.

The statement further indicated that the inauguration and retreat are set to occur at the National Universities Commission, 26 Aguiyi Ironsi Street, Maitama, Abuja, starting at 9:00 am on both days.

These appointments were announced shortly after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) threatened to commence another strike due to the Federal Government's delay in naming Governing Councils for federal universities.

Moreover, the union criticized the administration led by President Bola Tinubu for its indifferent approach to issues concerning academic staff in federal universities.

At a press conference held at the University of Abuja on Tuesday, ASUU also expressed disapproval of the 35 percent pay raise for professors and the 25 percent increase for other university academic staff.
