A confrontation in the Hayin Kogi forest within the Birninkudu Local Government Area of Jigawa has resulted in injuries to several farmers.
The incident was detailed in a statement released by DSP Lawan Shiisu, the Police Public Relations Officer for the state, on Monday.
"The command has received reports that at 1700HRS, farmers working in the Hayin Kogi Forest were assaulted by herders from the nearby Waza Fulani settlement of Birninkudu LGA during their preparations for the upcoming wet season farming," Shiisu reported.
He noted that some farmers managed to flee, leaving behind their tricycles, mobile phones, and farming tools.
Shiisu further stated that the police from the adjacent division, which patrols the forest area, were promptly dispatched to the location.
A 42-year-old individual, along with four others who were injured, were transported to Dutse General Hospital for medical attention and have been released following treatment.
"The farmers' possessions were retrieved and returned to them," Shiisu added.
He mentioned that the police are actively pursuing the suspects who are at large and that the investigation is ongoing.
"Peace has been reestablished in the region. The Commissioner of Police, Ahmadu Abdullahi, has convened a meeting with local stakeholders and has issued orders for the apprehension of those responsible for the disturbance.
"The CP has instructed the Area Commander of Birninku and the Divisional Police Officers of Birninkudu and Kiyawa to organize a stakeholders' meeting to alleviate tensions and prevent any further disruptions to peace," he concluded.
