FG Announces New Minimum Wage, Effective May 1st, as Labour Threatens Industrial Action

The federal government has announced that the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers will take effect on May 1st, 2024, despite ongoing negotiations with the organised labour. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkiruka Onyejeocha, made the announcement at the 2024 May Day celebration in Abuja, reassuring workers that the government is committed to enhancing their welfare.

However, the organised labour has threatened industrial action if the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage fails to conclude negotiations by the end of May. Labour leaders, Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, urged workers to remain vigilant and demanded a living wage of N615,000.
