FERMA Identifies Key Reasons for Road Failure in Nigeria

Speaking at a seminar organized by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) in Abuja, Agbasi emphasized that neglecting road maintenance leads to their failure. He highlighted the significant challenge posed by the backlog of maintenance tasks, which adversely affects the overall condition of roads nationwide.

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has attributed the deterioration of both major and minor road networks in Nigeria to inadequate maintenance funding. According to Dr. Chukwuma Agbasi, Managing Director of FERMA, the lack of provision for road maintenance during budgeting is a significant contributor to the failure of road networks in the country.

Speaking at a seminar organized by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) in Abuja, Agbasi emphasized that neglecting road maintenance leads to their failure. He highlighted the significant challenge posed by the backlog of maintenance tasks, which adversely affects the overall condition of roads nationwide.

Agbasi stressed the urgent need to address the ageing road surfaces across the country to prevent further deterioration. He identified unpredictable weather patterns, exacerbated by climate change, as a contributing factor to unexpected road damage. Additionally, he noted that improper use of road infrastructure, such as dumping refuse, uncontrolled parking, and petroleum product spills, accelerates wear and tear.

The managing director also highlighted that vehicles exceeding the specified weight limit of 11 tonnes in Nigeria impose stress on the roads, further exacerbating the situation. To address these challenges, FERMA is working to improve its operational funding and develop collaborative relationships with international road agencies.
