| Federal Government Intervenes for Nigerian Students at UK University Facing Deportation |
The Federal Government has intervened in the situation concerning the deportation orders given to some Nigerian students at Teesside University in the United Kingdom.
A delegation, including a representative from the Nigerian Embassy in the UK, Ambassador Christian Okeke, and leaders of the Nigerian Students Union in the UK, is set to meet with the university's management to discuss a resolution.
The move comes after a virtual meeting led by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, with the participation of Ambassador Okeke, Yemi Soile, the President of the Nigerian Students Union UK, and some of the students involved.
The meeting took place on Sunday.
NIDCOM's spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, confirmed the upcoming intervention in a statement released on Wednesday.
Balogun reported that the students shared their experiences at the meeting and are hopeful for a positive resolution.
Dabiri-Erewa advised the students to stay calm and avoid taking matters into their own hands.
She also requested that Teesside University ensure fair and just treatment of the students.
The matter came to light following a protest by Nigerian students at Teesside University on May 22, 2024.
The protest was a reaction to the university's orders for the students to leave the UK due to some students' failure to pay tuition fees.
