Emergency Meeting Called as Fuel Scarcity Worsens Across Nigeria

IPMAN's National President, Hammed Fashola, revealed that the meeting will assess the effectiveness of recent measures to address the scarcity and engage with the NNPC to find a permanent solution

As fuel scarcity continues to grip the nation, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has summoned an emergency meeting to address the issue. The National Executive Council will convene on Monday to find a lasting solution to the problem, which has persisted despite efforts by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to ease the situation.

IPMAN's National President, Hammed Fashola, revealed that the meeting will assess the effectiveness of recent measures to address the scarcity and engage with the NNPC to find a permanent solution. "We are working closely with NNPC, and the Monday meeting is to evaluate the current situation and determine the next steps," he said.

Fashola commended the NNPC for opening up its reserves in all existing depots across the country, which has helped to reduce the long queues at fuel stations. However, he urged the public to stop panic buying and only purchase what they need, as hoarding is exacerbating the problem.

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) held a meeting with independent marketers to discuss ways to prevent hoarding and ensure that petroleum products reach Nigerians, including those in rural areas, at the official rate. PETROAN's Chairman, Dr. Billy Gilly-Harry, expressed confidence that the solutions being implemented will bring an end to the fuel scarcity soon.

The meetings come as the NNPC has confirmed the distribution of 300 million liters of fuel to marketers, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has reported the offloading of 240 million liters of petrol at various depots. Despite these efforts, the fuel scarcity persists, and the emergency meeting aims to find a lasting solution to the problem.
