The Edo N'Okpa Movement, a Benin-based organization, has raised concerns about the recent announcement of a N70,000 minimum wage by the Edo State Government, describing it as a "Greek gift" aimed at buying votes ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
In a statement released by Emovon Osaretin, the national convener of the group, they questioned the timing of the announcement, citing the government's inability to effectively pay the existing N40,000 minimum wage, with many workers owed up to six months in arrears. They also suggested that the move may be a political tactic to set a trap for the next governor, as Governor Obaseki's anointed candidate, Asue Ighodalo, is unlikely to win the election.
The group also drew attention to the long-abandoned Benin-Ugo-Abraka road project, which has been ongoing since 2016, and accused the governor of deploying equipment to the site only during election periods, without making significant progress.
