Demonstrations Erupt at Dissolved Kano Emirate |
The House of Assembly, under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has annulled the legislation which former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje utilized to remove Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II from power in 2020.
Currently, demonstrators have taken to the streets of Gaya, one of the five emirates impacted by the annulment of the Kano Emirates Council Law.
The House of Assembly, under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has annulled the legislation which former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje utilized to remove Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II from power in 2020.
Upon signing the law on Thursday, Governor Abba Yusuf declared the disbandment of the additional four emirates established by Ganduje.
These emirates include Rano, Gaya, Karaye, and Bichi.
Furthermore, the governor instructed all rulers, such as Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir, the Emir of Gaya, to relinquish their positions to Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, Deputy Governor, who is in charge of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
According to Daily Trust, the deposed Emir left the palace around midnight on Thursday.
The town showed no signs of unrest or opposition, as armed security forces were present.
Resident Abubakar Shuaibu mentioned that some individuals were discontent with the changes.
However, by Sunday morning, locals had gathered in protest against the emirate's dissolution.
Brandishing signs and voicing dissent through songs, the demonstrators decried what they perceive as an unjust act, suggesting that the emirate's dissolution was politically motivated.
