The retired Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, a past Chief of Army Staff, has called on the military leadership to hasten the counter-insurgency operations to bring an end to the conflict in the Lake Chad Basin Region.
Speaking at the 1st International Conference held by the Department of History and Strategic Studies at the University of Maiduguri, Buratai addressed the audience yesterday.
He praised the military's dedication and actions against banned factions, emphasizing that the conflict should not extend as those in Colombia and Sri Lanka have.
He underscored the crucial importance of military operations, which include the synergy of military intelligence, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and cooperation with community leaders to tackle the security issues in the area.
"We are of the belief that the conflict should reach a conclusion promptly and not drag on as seen in the nations of Colombia and Sri Lanka," he remarked.
Buratai also mentioned that during his tenure, the military regained control of nine local government districts in Borno in a span of five months.
Prof Aliyu Shugaba, the vice chancellor of the university, highlighted the resilience of the University of Maiduguri, which stood firm against all pressures to close, even after four consecutive suicide bomber attacks on its premises.
