The National President of the Fish Dealers Association of Nigeria, Mohammed Laminu, confirmed the attack to LEADERSHIP in Maiduguri on Wednesday, expressing shock at the loss experienced by the association's members.
In a tragic turn of events, at least 31 fishermen were slain and another 40 are missing following an assault by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on Tunbun Rogo, a fishing hamlet in the Kukawa local government area of Borno State, on Tuesday night.
The National President of the Fish Dealers Association of Nigeria, Mohammed Laminu, confirmed the attack to LEADERSHIP in Maiduguri on Wednesday, expressing shock at the loss experienced by the association's members.
"The killing of our fishermen by terrorists in Baga deeply saddens us. As of now, forty fishermen are still missing. We urge the government and the Nigerian military to intensify their efforts to protect citizens from terrorist attacks. The terrorists' actions are devastating our fishing industry," he stated.
An anonymous eyewitness reported that the terrorists executed 31 fishermen, leaving numerous families in limbo regarding the fate of their relatives.
"Victims' bodies are still out in the wilderness, while survivors who escaped to nearby thickets are slowly returning, some injured and receiving care at a military facility in Cross Kauwa.
"The terrorists, armed and ready, corralled the fishermen before unleashing gunfire. This attack came after the military had instructed the fishermen to leave the area for a clearance operation. Despite adhering to this directive, the terrorists ambushed them upon their return," the witness recounted.
The source added, "The terrorists assembled us, claiming they intended to deliver a sermon. Instead, they executed an order from their commander to kill us. Thirty-one fishermen perished, and over 40 managed to flee.
"A terrorist was reprimanded by their leader for allowing some of us to escape."
The deceased were fishermen originating from Monguno, Doron Baga, Cross Kauwa, and Baga.
As of the time this report was prepared, no official statement has been released by the Nigerian military or any other security agency regarding the attack.
Before the Boko Haram insurgency, Baga in Kukawa was renowned for its fish farming and the production of delectable smoked fish, which attracted buyers from across Nigeria to Borno State.
