Biafra Day: IPOB requests WAEC to reschedule exams in Southeast on May 30

Spokesperson Emma Powerful clarified that May 30 will observe a sit-at-home to commemorate Biafra Day.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has requested the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to reschedule exams slated for May 30, recognized as 'Biafra Day' in the Southeast.

IPOB has also appealed to Nnamdi Azikiwe University to defer its convocation planned for the same day.

Spokesperson Emma Powerful clarified that May 30 will observe a sit-at-home to commemorate Biafra Day.

Powerful emphasized that WAEC should avoid risking children's safety as the day is deemed unsafe for individuals in the Southeast.

The appeal was made in an open letter addressed to the WAEC Board and UNIZIK Vice Chancellor, Professor Charles Okechukwu Esimone.

The letter states, "The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, urges you to reconsider your university's convocation and WAEC exams scheduled for May 30, 2024.

"Please reschedule your events as May 30 is Biafra Heroes Day, observed with a sit-at-home by all Biafrans in the region.

"May 30 is a day dedicated to honoring the Biafran heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice for our survival. It is a sacred day for reflection and homage to those who perished in the Nigerian war against Biafra from 1967 to 1970, with the violence persisting to this day.

No public activities should occur in Biafra Land on this day. Biafra Heroes Day is a public holiday and a sit-at-home for Biafrans, with all markets, schools, banks, and offices closed.

"Only essential and emergency services are permitted to operate on this day.

"The West African Examination Board must not compromise the safety of children, as the day is unsafe for anyone in the region. The exams should be rescheduled to ensure their safety. May 30 is a day of remembrance for Biafra. Any harm to children on this day would be deeply regrettable.

Through this open letter, IPOB appeals to the Vice Chancellor and Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) Awka and others with scheduled events on May 30, 2024, to postpone their plans."
