Bandits slay 11 in Katsina districts |
The Katsina State Police Command has verified the death of 11 individuals due to bandit attacks on three localities within Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Public Relations Officer Mr Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu announced the incident in a statement released in Katsina on Sunday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) indicated that Sadiq-Aliyu was addressing a claim that suggested 40 individuals had perished in the assault.
"There's been a circulating report, particularly on Facebook, alleging that bandits assaulted three villages in Bakori, resulting in 40 fatalities.
The command wants to clearly refute this assertion as unfounded and clarify the facts.
"On May 25, 2024, bandits perpetrated an attack on Unguwar Lamido village in Bakori, during which they fatally shot 11 individuals.
Upon receiving the news, the Divisional Police Officer of Bakori swiftly assembled officers and proceeded to the location, where they re-established order and averted further casualties," he stated.
He implored the public to ignore the erroneous report and cautioned against the dissemination of unconfirmed information.
He recommended that the public should confirm information through official sources before distribution, as spreading false news can incite panic, fear, and undue anxiety.
He cited the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr A. A. Musa, expressing condolences to the victims' friends and families and denouncing the assault.
"The commissioner has mandated an exhaustive inquiry into the matter and has dispatched extra forces to capture those behind the crime.
The Commissioner also calls on anyone with valuable information that could aid the investigation to step forward and help bring the culprits to justice.
The probe is active; the command is diligently collaborating with pertinent stakeholders and community members to locate and detain those accountable for the attack," he added.
