The recent results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) have sparked concern among Nigerian stakeholders due to only 23 percent of candidates passing.
JAMB reports that out of the more than 1.9 million examinees nationwide, an astonishing 1,402,490 did not meet the average benchmark score of 200.
The outcome has led to widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians, with some pointing to social media addiction and parental neglect as causes for the widespread underperformance.
Dr. Joseph Effiong, Managing Director of UpdateAfrika Communications, suggests that the dire economic conditions in Nigeria may be distracting students, including those who have taken on the role of family providers due to their parents' vulnerability.
"How can we expect these students to focus on their studies when they can't even concentrate or absorb information on an empty stomach?" he questions.
Effiong also calls on the government to ensure that the educational environment is conducive to the youth's learning success.
"Are our schools staffed with sufficient teachers? Are they well-equipped to prepare students with the necessary knowledge for exams like the UTME?" he inquires.
These unanswered questions underscore the need to critically assess Nigeria's educational framework. Effiong emphasizes that quality instruction, available resources, and parental engagement are essential for student achievement.
He advocates for a united effort from all educational stakeholders to address the pattern of academic failures.
Effiong remarks that the struggle to make ends meet, exacerbated by food inflation and the high cost of living, is a significant distraction that hinders students from focusing on their studies.
