Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members will determine his political future in the 2027 general elections.
He mentioned that it is premature to decide on his candidacy for the presidency in the upcoming elections.
In a recent BBC interview, Atiku, the PDP's presidential nominee in the 2023 general elections, suggested that his meeting with Labour Party's presidential candidate Peter Obi might hint at potential collaborations for the 2027 elections.
Daily Trust Saturday reported that Atiku Abubakar had earlier last week met separately with Peter Obi of the Labour Party, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and ex-Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido.
He expressed that their discussions were positive for Nigeria's democracy and hinted at a possible coalition among the opposition parties. He also addressed rumors, confirming that they could indeed present a united candidate.
Atiku stated that if PDP members collectively decide to zone the presidential candidacy to the South East, he would respect that decision.
"Since the last election, I've been clear—if there's a consensus among our party members for the South East to nominate the candidate, we'll all support it. If our parties reach a similar consensus, that's acceptable," Atiku remarked.
While Atiku acknowledged the likelihood of an opposition alliance for the 2027 elections, he did not specify when such an agreement might be finalized.
He also dismissed suggestions that he would retire from politics after the 2023 elections, saying, "We've battled against military regimes, not to mention civilian ones. So, if you think otherwise, you're mistaken. We will always stand against injustice and poor governance. I'm not done with political activism."
Atiku emphasized that his continued political engagement does not hinder the emergence of new leaders.
When asked if his recent dialogues with prominent politicians could be a prelude to the 2027 elections, he replied, "We live in a democracy, and remember, we fought for its establishment. Thus, we'll persist in promoting good governance and a robust democratic system. We won't stand by idly as conditions worsen."
