2024 Hajj Preparations: NAHCON Urges Medical Volunteers to Embrace Dedication and Patience

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has called upon the members of the National Medical Team for the 2024 Hajj to commit to providing voluntary and effective services to the pilgrims.

Jalal Arabi, the Executive Chairman of NAHCON, emphasized this directive in Abuja on Saturday during the selection and official commissioning of the medical team, in anticipation of the first Hajj flight set for May 15.

Mr. Arabi stressed the shift in approach, highlighting that the core objective now is to serve willingly and with dedication as part of the medical team for the 2024 Hajj.

“Your readiness to serve and to volunteer is fundamental. We applied out of a desire to contribute, and you have been chosen to join the medical team because you have valuable skills to offer. We’re aware of the immense responsibility we’re undertaking, given the population of over 200 million in our nation. It’s a role of significance, and while it may seem daunting, it’s a duty we remind you to carry with pride,” he stated.

Mr. Arabi expressed his pleasure that the team members have consented to offer their services without expectation of reward.

He continued, “Your willingness to volunteer is commendable, deserving of higher praise than any earthly recognition. What matters most is your service and the spirit of volunteerism, though your efforts will not go unnoticed.”

However, Mr. Arabi acknowledged that should challenges arise, provisions would be made to support the medical team financially, albeit not as generously as in the past. He expressed confidence in the team’s professionalism and integrity.

Anofi Elegushi, the NAHCON Commissioner of Operations, highlighted the critical role of the medical team in the success of the Hajj operation.

“A well-thought-out medical plan is essential for the well-being of over 60,000 pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj. Our medical personnel must be prepared to exercise patience and understanding with the pilgrims, who may have different expectations from patients back home,” he advised.

Dr. Abubakar Ismael, the leader of the 2024 Hajj Medical Mission, mentioned that the screening process aligns with the guidelines set by Saudi authorities. He encouraged the team to prioritize service over financial or material rewards, assuring that such an attitude would lead to success.

Mr. Ismael concluded, “Our guiding principles in Makkah, Madinah, and throughout our time in Muna, Arafat, and Muzzalifah will be service and patience.”

An estimated 65,500 Nigerian pilgrims are expected to perform the 2024 Hajj, joining millions from across the globe in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
