Over 4,000 JAMB Candidates with High Scores Failed to Secure University Admission Between 2019 and 2022

According to the report, which analyzed data obtained from JAMB, out of 6.9 million candidates who sat for the UTME between 2019 and 2022, only 2.03 million were admitted into various tertiary schools, while 4.87 million candidates failed to secure admission.

A recent report has revealed that a significant number of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) candidates who scored 300 and above in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) failed to secure admission into Nigerian universities between 2019 and 2022. Despite meeting the minimum requirement for admission, a total of 4,385 candidates were unable to gain admission into tertiary institutions.

According to the report, which analyzed data obtained from JAMB, out of 6.9 million candidates who sat for the UTME between 2019 and 2022, only 2.03 million were admitted into various tertiary schools, while 4.87 million candidates failed to secure admission.

The report highlighted that in 2019, 679 candidates who scored 300 or above were not admitted, while in 2020, 1,456 candidates who scored 300 or higher were denied admission. Similarly, in 2021, 125 candidates who scored 300 or above were not admitted, including 35 who applied to study Medicine and Surgery, and 64 who applied for engineering-related courses.

JAMB attributed the reasons for the failure of candidates, including high scorers, to secure admission to:

- Wrong O'Level subject combination

- Low post-UTME screening score

- Non-acceptance of admission offer

- Duplication of application

- Absence from post-UTME screening

- Mismatch of catchment

This report highlights the challenges faced by many candidates in gaining admission into Nigerian universities, despite meeting the minimum requirements. It also underscores the need for candidates to carefully consider their subject combinations, post-UTME screening scores, and other factors that can affect their chances of securing admission.
