Ondo State Mourns as Governor Akeredolu is Laid to Rest

Akeredolu, who was also the chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, was widely regarded as a visionary and progressive leader who initiated several projects and policies to improve the welfare and security of his people


The people of Ondo State bid farewell to their late governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, who died on December 27, 2023, after a long battle with leukemia. Akeredolu, who was 67 years old, was a prominent lawyer and politician who served as the governor of Ondo State from 2017 until his death.


The funeral service of Akeredolu was held at St Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, his hometown, where he was eulogized by dignitaries, family members, and friends. The service was attended by President Bola Tinubu, who described Akeredolu as a loyal and patriotic leader who contributed immensely to the development of Ondo State and the nation. Tinubu also expressed his condolences to the widow of Akeredolu, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, and their four children.


After the service, Akeredolu’s body was taken to the burial site, Owo, where he was interred with full state honors. The burial was witnessed by thousands of mourners who paid their last respects to the departed governor. The deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who has assumed the responsibilities of the governor in acting capacity, said that Akeredolu’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the people of Ondo State.


Akeredolu, who was also the chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, was widely regarded as a visionary and progressive leader who initiated several projects and policies to improve the welfare and security of his people. He was also a champion of the digital economy sector, as he appointed qualified Nigerians to serve in key agencies under the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy


Akeredolu’s death has left a huge vacuum in the political landscape of Ondo State and Nigeria at large, as he was one of the most influential and respected governors in the country. He will be remembered for his courage, integrity, and service to humanity.
