Nigerian Afrobeats Stars Davido and Burna Boy Shut Out At 66th Grammy Awards

The 66th Grammy Awards was not a night to remember for the Nigerian Afrobeats scene, as none of the 10 nominations across five categories resulted in a win.

The first-ever ‘Best African Music Performance’ award went to South-African singer Tyla, who impressed the voters with her 2023 track, “Water”. She beat the likes of Burna Boy, Davido, Tems, Ayra Starr, Olamide and Asake, who represented Nigeria in this category.

The Afrobeats stars also failed to shine at the Grammy Premiere ceremony, where most of the awards are given out before the main show. Burna Boy and Davido, who both won the Best Global Album award in the past, lost it this year to Shakti, a world fusion band that released the album, “This Moment”. They also came short in the Best Global Music Performance category, which was won by Indian composer Zakir Hussain for the track “Pashto” featuring Bela Fleck and Edger Meyer.

Burna Boy, who calls himself the African giant, had another chance to win a Grammy in the Best Melodic Rap category, where he was nominated for his track ‘Sittin’ on Top of The world’ with 21 Savage. He even performed the song at the main show, but it was not enough to sway the voters, who chose Lil Durk and J Cole’s “All My Life” instead.

Tems, who made history last year by winning the Best Melodic Rap category for her collaboration with Future and Drake on the track ‘Wait for You’, also missed out on a second Grammy. She was nominated for the Song Written for Visual Media category, for her contribution to the Black Panther theme song ‘Lift me Up’ performed by Rihanna. However, the award went to Billie Eilish, who wrote and performed ‘What Was I Made For’ for the 2023 fantasy drama ‘Barbie’.

The question on many fans' minds is: did Davido or Burna Boy win any Grammy in 2024? The answer is no. According to the news, both artists lost all their nominations and went home empty-handed. This is a contrast to their previous achievements, as Davido won three Grammys in 2023 and Burna Boy won one in 2021. However, both artists have expressed gratitude for their fans' support and vowed to keep making music that represents their culture and identity.
