On Tuesday, Davido announced on his X account that he and his foundation, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), would donate 300 million Naira (about $730,000) to orphanages across Nigeria. He said that this was part of his yearly contribution to the nation that he loves and cherishes.
He wrote: “I and my foundation pledge the sum of 300 million Naira to orphanages around Nigeria … as my yearly contribution to the Nation ❤️ … details of disbursement tomorrow 🇳🇬”
This is not the first time that Davido has shown his philanthropic side and his commitment to giving back to the society. In 2023, he gave out 237 million Naira (about $575,000) to 424 orphanages in Nigeria2. This came after he had donated 250 million Naira (about $607,000) to 292 orphanages in 20213.
Davido’s generosity in 2021 was sparked by a viral challenge that he initiated on his birthday in November. He asked his fellow celebrities and fans to send him 1 million Naira each as a birthday gift. To his surprise, he received over 200 million Naira (about $486,000) in less than four days4.
Instead of spending the money on himself, Davido decided to use it to support orphanages in Nigeria. He formed a five-person committee, led by Titi Adebayo, to oversee the distribution of the funds. He also published a list of the orphanages that received the donations on his social media platforms.
