On Sunday, a road accident involving an empty 40ft flatbed truck and another loaded truck left two people injured in Lagos. The accident happened on a bridge opposite ‘Sifax’ Company by Ijora ‘Olopa’ as the trucks were heading to Apapa.

According to a press statement by Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver of the empty truck lost control due to brake failure and collided with the other truck. The driver and his assistant, known as ‘motor boy’, were trapped under the truck and suffered severe injuries.

The statement said that LASTMA personnel, led by Lastma Goriola Jimoh ‘Zebra’ (Zone 22) Apapa, arrived at the scene and rescued the victims with the help of other truck drivers nearby. The driver had a head injury and was bleeding profusely, while the motor boy had a spinal cord fracture. They were taken to the General Hospital at Apapa for urgent medical attention.

The statement also said that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LRU) removed the crashed truck from the bridge and that the case was handed over to the police at Ijora - Badia Police Station for further investigation.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Bakare Oki, urged the owners of articulated trucks to conduct regular safety training and awareness campaigns for their drivers and to ensure that they follow the road signs and speed limit while driving on highways in and out of the state.
