What causes fibroids in women’s bodies?
Many people, especially married women, want to know more about what causes fibroids in women’s bodies. Fibroids are a type of growth that develops in or on the uterus of a woman. Sometimes they become very large and cause severe pain, but sometimes they show no symptoms at all.
What causes fibroids in women’s bodies
The exact cause of fibroids is unknown, but experts have identified some factors that can influence their formation, such as genetics, hormones, pregnancy, family history, environmental factors and others. According to statistics, it has been found that 80 percent of women can have fibroids by the time they reach the age of 50. However, there are usually no signs that indicate that they have fibroids.
Types of fibroids in women
Fibroids are located in the womb or uterus. They vary in size, number and location for each woman. Here are some common types of fibroids:
Intramural fibroids: These are the most common type of fibroids. They appear in the muscular wall of the uterus. Intramural fibroids can grow and stretch the uterus.
Subserosal fibroids: These are found outside the uterus, on the outer layer called the serosa. They can grow and make the belly look bigger on one side.
Pedunculated fibroids: These are subserosal fibroids that develop a base, a thin stalk that supports the tumor.
Submucosal fibroids: These are rare types of tumors that develop in the middle muscle layer, or myometrium, of the uterus. Submucosal tumors can cause heavy menstrual bleeding and difficulty getting pregnant.
Symptoms of fibroids in women’s bodies
The symptoms of fibroids depend on the number, size and location of the tumors. For example, submucosal fibroids can cause heavy menstrual bleeding and difficulty getting pregnant.
Some women may not have any symptoms at all, especially if they are in menopause. Fibroids can shrink during and after menopause. This is because women who stop menstruating experience a decrease in the levels of estrogen and progesterone, hormones that stimulate fibroid growth.
Some common symptoms of fibroids include:
Heavy bleeding between periods or periods that include blood clots
Pain in the pelvis or lower back and increased menstrual cramping
Frequent urination
Pain during sex
Menstruation that lasts longer than usual
Pressure or fullness in the lower abdomen
Abdominal swelling or enlargement
